BMI Categories (NHS)
What is BMI?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a widely used measure to classify whether a person is underweight, healthy weight, overweight, or obese. It is calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by your height in metres squared.
While BMI is a useful screening tool, it doesn't directly measure body fat or account for factors like muscle mass, bone density, age, or sex. Athletes, for example, may have a high BMI due to muscle mass rather than excess fat.
The NHS uses BMI as an initial indicator of whether someone might benefit from weight management support. Our medical team considers BMI alongside other health factors to provide personalised treatment plans.
BMI Categories (NHS Guidelines)
Underweight: Below 18.5
May indicate nutritional deficiency or other health issues
Healthy Weight: 18.5 to 24.9
Generally associated with lower health risks
Overweight: 25 to 29.9
Increased risk of weight-related health conditions
Obese Class I: 30 to 34.9
Higher risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and other conditions
Obese Class II: 35 to 39.9
Significantly increased health risks requiring medical attention
Obese Class III: 40 and above
Severe obesity with substantial health risks
